Recreational Marijuana in Michigan

In November of 2017, proponents submitted 365,000 signatures to put a Marijuana legalization measure on the November 2018, ballot.

In April of 2018, petitions were certified and there were enough signatures to put the measure on the ballot.

On November 6, 2018, the measure – Michigan Regulation and Taxation of Marijuana Act (MRTMA) – passed by a 56-44 margin making Michigan the 10th state to legalize Marijuana for recreational use.

MRTMA allows persons over the age of 21 to possess up to 2.5 ounces of Marijuana in public and up to 10 ounces at home, and to cultivate up to 12 plants at home.

MRTMA also sets up a system for state licensed grow and distribution of Marijuana.The sales are subject to a 10 percent excise tax and a 6 percent sales tax.
